It is amazing, when you think about it, how many small things you can change that will make a big impact on the environment in the long run! Yes, some tips are not suitable for everyone, but just think about it ...
It can be fun to help the environment - AND your pocket!

LET YOUR CREATIVITY SOAR!

If you do have an external toilet cistern, save water by putting a water-filled 0.5 or 1ltr bottle into the cistern. This will reduce the water per flush by around 0.5 to 1ltr!
Maybe it is an option to let some of your staff work from home, therefore reducing travel-related costs (time, fuel, exhaust fumes).
If you employ your own cleaning staff (not a cleaning company) ask them to clean with baking soda and vinegar instead of all those chemical cleaners. Not only is it better for our environment, but it’s also cheaper AND not harsh on your breathing or skin (think allergies).
When you need new office furniture, consider buying second hand, or if you are a “handy wo/man”, build it yourself.

HOW YOU CAN BE LESS WASTEFUL AT WORK

Here in New Zealand, we had our National Holiday on the 6th of February: Waitangi Day.
Holidays are usually a great excuse to get together and eat, but we must eat anyway, so we'll have a look at the workplace today and how you can be less wasteful at work.

BE MINDFUL OF WASTE IN YOUR OFFICE

Set up a container “library” in the staff room/kitchen, that can be used to carry package-free food from home.
Provide real kitchenware rather than disposable cups, plates, and cutlery.
Do you love your coffee or tea as much as your staff? Buy eco-friendly and responsibly sourced coffee and tea. This can help reduce deforestation, water pollution, and erosion.
Use coffee grounds in your garden! Collect it in a bin/container and if you don’t have a garden, maybe a staff member would love it for theirs.
When you cater for staff or client meetings, buy local, if possible organic, and don’t use plastic cutlery, plates, and cups.
Think about providing filtered water for your staff, so they can refill their bottles or glasses straight from the tap.

This month it is time to talk about electricity usage. We might not be aware of what appliances or habits of ours contribute to our usage and to those pesky, high bills.

MONITOR YOUR ELECTRICITY USAGE

For monitoring and measuring your energy usage, you could install meters (or have them installed). Then you can see the appliances that use the most energy and switch to more energy-efficient ones or just use them less.
Check with your energy provider if they offer renewable energy (in NZ most of them provide that)
Reduce the time your artificial light is turned on, rather use natural daylight, by keeping curtains, drapes, shades, blinds open during the day.
Don’t overheat your office (but don’t let it cool down too much, that’s unhealthy!_
Reduce the brightness of your computer screen. This can save up to 20% of the monitor’s energy.
Turn off your appliances at the end of your day, which includes printers, computers, and the switch on the wall. It’s unbelievable how much energy you could save over time.
LED lightbulbs are more expensive, but they last much longer and are more energy-efficient. Give it a try!

Today I talk about How to save on printing, which helps your wallet AND the environment.

Buy refilled ink cartridges, they are cheaper, and the old cartridges are reused, so there is less non-biodegradable waste going to landfill.
Where do you write down your “little” notes? You could use your phone or your computer.
If you print a lot, you could cut up the used printed paper and use the empty backside as your notepad. Of course, only if the printout is nonconfidential!
Talking about writing notes, use biodegradable pens made from recycled materials.
Buy recycled paper, too! It is cheaper and better for our environment.
If suitable, print double-sided rather than on two sheets of paper. Just take care if you want to turn the page on the long edge or the short edge.

In today's blog I'll give you some ideas about what you can do to save.

Could you have client meetings on Zoom rather than in person? That can save travel costs, emissions, and lots of time, too. You still have the feeling that you talk to each other "in person" because you can see each other.
You can improve air quality by beautifying the office with indoor plants. There are a lot of plants that are especially well suited for this. And it also looks nice, lifts the spirits, and encourages you or your staff to care about them (after all, they need some water!.
Select your suppliers sensibly. Do they comply with laws and regulations that relate to pollution and waste? Do they operate and source their products ethically? Do they care about our environment?
